Help and info for women

What you can expect from Women’s Aid

We will listen to what you tell us.

We will believe you.

We will not tell anyone else that you have contacted us or what you have said.

We support women and children who have experience of domestic abuse in many ways. This can be in a one-off phone call or over many years.

We will respect what you tell us and will not judge you. We know that women need to make their own decisions and choices, and we will try to give you all the information and support you need to decide what to do.

Information and support

We can give you information and support and the chance to talk about what has been happening. We can also tell you about your legal rights, housing options and welfare benefits.

Somewhere to stay

We can help you sort out somewhere safe to stay if you need this. This can be in safe, temporary accommodation provided by us or through local councils and housing associations. If you need to get right away, we can help you find somewhere to stay in another area.

Our accommodation varies in each area. It can be in self-contained units or shared houses. Some is purpose-built and fully accessible for women and children with disabilities. Other accommodation is only partially accessible. There are two refuges for black and minority ethnic women: Shakti and Hemat Gryffe

Working with children and young people

Children also need information and support. We work with children, whether or not they are in Women’s Aid accommodation. Our support work includes one-to-one work, group work and play. This helps children and young people talk about their experiences, make sense of their fears and worries and feel better about themselves.

Supporting you

We also offer advocacy to help you get the help you need from other agencies; accompaniment to lawyers and so on; information and individual support sessions including benefits advice; drop-in support and coffee mornings; parenting and life skills support; help with safety and home security.
